As part of Black History Month, I am giving the following public lecture, which is free and open to all:

Winifred Atwell: Jazz Piano, Hit Singles, TV Personality of the 1950s

Wednesday 28th October

18:00 The Vernon Castle room, 3rd Floor, Millennium Library, The Forum, Norwich

Winifred Atwell was a Trinidadian pianist who enjoyed great popularity in Britain and Australia from the 1950s with a series of boogie-woogie and ragtime hits, selling over 20 million records. She was the first black person to have a number-one hit in the UK Singles Chart and is still the only female instrumentalist to do so. Professor McKay (Media, UEA) will explore this extraordinary woman who found fame around the world celebrating her achievements.
